Photoelectric vs. Ionization - What are the differences?

!±8± Photoelectric vs. Ionization - What are the differences?

Photoelectric Smoke Detector

In a nutshell, a photoelectric smoke detector senses smoke using a room specially designed optics. In fact, the photoelectric smoke detector is often referred to as an optical smoke detector.

If you were one of those smoke detectors, adjust what you see, is an infrared LED (Light Emitting Diode) on one side of the room and the other side is a light-sensing device called the photodiode would be.

How does a photocellSmoke detectors work?

In its non-alarm, sleep, it flashes a small beam of infrared light to the receiver. When this beam of invisible light partially blocked or missing smoke particles, is the modification of the circuit (voltage drop), and thus, the smoke detector alarm.

Photoelectric smoke detector is better in applications where the smoldering smoke can be dense in a fire started.

Ionization

The ionization smokeRoom is different in that the sensor has a small amount (about a milligram) of the radiation contained in the device. This alpha radiation is used and called Americium 241 has been found safe for the environment.

The scope of this unit is called the ionization chamber. Within this space are the electrodes that perform a constant amount of electricity between them.

How does ionization smoke a sense?

As already mentioned, in its normalState holding the electrode steady amount of energy. When smoke enters the chamber, it reduces the ionization of radioactive alpha particles between the electrodes. This in turn reduces the electric current and sets the detector and alarm.

It is recommended that better ionization is used in applications where very little hot. In other words, this type of fire over a flaming fire smoke in nature.

How canThese two differ in the sensitivity of the smoke detectors and response time?

Tests have shown that the ionization detector to respond more quickly because it is not necessary to wait until the smoke in the room. The disadvantage is that there is a tendency to more false alarms than those caused photoelectric type.

Because of this ionization sensitivity issues to be installed less than before. I have not verified yet, but I have heard that some manufacturers of suspensionProduction of ionization.

I would note that the smoke detectors because of photo-electric is a bit 'slower in response, many manufacturers provide a built-in thermal units (heat) detectors are in them.

Can you find the difference is one of them?

For most manufacturers use the same case for both the photo-detector and the ion. The best way to know what you have smoke alarms, reading the label on theBottom of the smoke detector. If it is not said explicitly what kind of smoke detector is, then you may need to find the model number for verification.
